West Virginia Coach Bob Huggins grew up in Midvale, Ohio, where he likes to say there’s “500 people, two stop lights and nine bars.” His favorite story about the hardscrabble attitude he developed there involves climbing into a local’s pickup truck with no rear-view mirrors.

Huggins asked why it was mirrorless, and the man responded: “I don’t back up. We’re going forward, son.”

Through a season riddled with inconsistency that showed hints of both brilliance and futility, West Virginia has kept pressing forward.

And after outlasting No. 8 seed Georgetown, 60-58, in the Big East championship on Saturday night, West Virginia may be driving toward the top line of the N.C.A.A. tournament.

Da’Sean Butler scored 20 points, including the game-winning lay-up with 4.2 seconds remaining. Butler drove into two Georgetown players and flipped up an ugly line drive that seemed to stop on the back rim and fall down the rim.

His foil all night, Georgetown’s dynamic guard Chris Wright, drove the length of the floor and bricked a wild lay-up attempt at the buzzer. Wright finished with a game-high 20 for Georgetown.

Butler’s efforts earned him the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, as he led the Mountaineers to their first Big East tournament title.

With its inspired performance here, the question lingers: can a team that was seeded No. 4 in the Big East tournament be a No. 1 seed in the N.C.A.A. Tournament?

And while Georgetown failed to win the program’s eighth Big East tournament title, the Hoyas may have improved their stock more than any other team. By upsetting top-seeded Syracuse and blowing out No. 5 Marquette, Georgetown projects as high as a No. 3 seed in the N.C.A.A. tournament.

But on Saturday night, Georgetown ran into a toxic mix of New York swagger and Midvale muscle. All five West Virginia starters hail from the New York metropolitan area, and they all have the grit New York players are known for.

West Virginia’s man-to-man defense limited Georgetown to 4-of-16 shooting from 3-point range, a number that could also be attributed to fatigue from the Hoyas playing four consecutive nights here.

But the game got interesting with less than a minute remaining when Austin Freeman splashed home a 3-pointer over West Virginia’s 1-3-1 zone, which the Mountaineers used rarely on Saturday night. That tied the score at 56-56 and set the stage for a frenetic finish. It was first time Georgetown had tied or led in a taut second half.

With 27.6 seconds remaining and the score tied, Wright fouled West Virginia’s Joe Mazzulla.

Georgetown Coach John Thompson III screamed, “No, no,” after the foul. Wright pointed up to the shot clock, which had been turned off. Mazzulla calmly drained both free throws to give West Virginia a 58-56 lead.

Wright made up for his blunder with an acrobatic, hanging lay-up in traffic with 17 seconds that tied the score at 58-58.

That set the stage for Butler, who used this tournament as a showcase for his polished midrange game.

The question now is whether he’ll be showing that off for a No. 1 seed. After the Big East received three No. 1 seeds in last year’s N.C.A.A. tournament, the Mountaineers are making a compelling case to join Syracuse as a No. 1 seed this year.

In a bizarre three-day ride at Madison Square Garden that saw the top three seeds lose consecutively in the quarterfinals, No. 4 West Virginia slugged its way past the remaining competition and appear to be jelling at the right time.

The Mountaineers résumé includes eight victories over Top 50 teams in the Ratings Percentage Index. Their only questionable loss came at Connecticut on Feb. 22. That was also their last loss, and the Mountaineers will go into the N.C.A.A. tournament with six consecutive victories.

West Virginia is not the most aesthetic bunch. Mazzulla’s shoulder is so hurt he can barely shoot. Backup forward Cam Thoroughman, the Mountaineers’ enforcer, has a game so limited that Mazzulla teases him that his most impressive statistic is dribble hand-offs.

“It’s not really a style, all it is is effort,” Butler said. “You put the right effort out there, there’s no reason you can’t play. People might sit back and say that Joe Mazzulla, Cam Thoroughman and John Flowers aren’t the best shooters or the best ball handlers or whatever the case may be. But they’re out there and we win games.”

That was what happened Saturday night. Shuffling in substitutions for offense and defense after starter Wellington Smith fouled out, Huggins kept his team driving forward.

And as John Denver’s “Country Roads, Take Me Home” blared over the public address system, it provided a fitting moment.

With their mirrors removed from the regular season, West Virginia will move forward to the N.C.A.A. tournament.

(CNN) — Heavy rains and hurricane-force winds that surpassed 70 miles per hour in places toppled trees, left more than a half-million people without power and suspended travel throughout much of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region Saturday night.

Four inches of rain fell in parts of the region, and the National Weather Service extended storm and flood warnings for much of the area into Sunday.

“This storm is such a slow mover that it’s not going to pull out probably until Monday,” said CNN meteorologist Jacqui Jeras. “There’s another whole day to get through with heavy rain and strong winds.”

Some areas will see an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain by Sunday, Jeras said, though winds are expected to die down to a maximum of 30 miles an hour.

Power outages darkened much of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

New Jersey’s PSE&G electric company said 136,000 customers were without power Saturday night, while Long Island Power Authority said close to 190,000 customers lacked electricity.

“The ground is so wet from all the snow we’ve had this winter, it’s helping the trees to topple over, as well as our utility poles, said Long Island Power Authority president and CEO Kevin Law. “The conditions are still too terrible to get crews out there.”

Law said that some customers will likely go without power until early next week.

Con Edison reported 97,000 customers without power in New York City and Westchester County, while other electric companies in the region reported tens of thousands more were in the dark.

Amtrak suspended trains between New York and Philadelphia because of issues with overhead wires and power outages. About 10 Amtrak trains were affected.

New Jersey Transit stopped train service for the majority of its system, including the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coastline, Raritan Valley, and Atlantic City Rail lines. A New Jersey Transit spokeswoman said many trees have fallen on overhead wires.

Boston’s Logan International Airport diverted flights due to weather and there were reports of major delays at airports throughout the Northeast.

Across the region, trees and utility poles crashed onto houses and cars. Part of a crane collapsed at a construction site in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The New York police department brought in additional 911 operators Saturday to handle the surge in emergency calls.

David Diaz knocked down in 1st and 12th rounds to lose unanimous decision

Arlington, Texas — Chicago’s David Diaz failed to recover the world lightweight title he lost to Manny Pacquiao in 2008, dropping a unanimous decision to Mexico’s Humberto Soto Saturday night at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Diaz was knocked down in the first and 12th rounds, and despite a predictable courageous effort, judges gave Soto the WBC lightweight belt by scores of 115-111, 117-109 and 117-109 as a massive crowd of 50,994 looked on.

“Very disappointed,” Diaz (35-3-1) said. “It wasn’t supposed to be this way.”

The final round captured the essence of the clash, with Soto landing big rights, but Diaz inflicting blows inside. Soto’s power in faster exchanges revealed his ultimate edge in the competitive bout.

A final Soto flurry resulted in a second knockdown of Diaz in the fight’s final 20 seconds, even if the proud veteran protested, “No!” Diaz said he was charging forward, throwing a punch.

Diaz was knocked down in the final minute of the first round by a swift right-left combination by Soto (51-7-2). Seconds earlier, Soto took the brunt of a head butt, needing a few seconds to recover without suffering a cut.

The southpaw Diaz, however, was dealing with a small cut over his right eye, the exact area of an eyelid that was recently stitched.

BEIJING, March 14 (Reuters) – China’s inflation in February was higher than expected, but not by enough to force a change in strategy, central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan said on Sunday.

Bonds

The People’s Bank of China would stick to its original plan, Zhou said, in response to a question about whether February inflation data would force the central bank to move faster to cool the economy.

“February CPI was higher than forecast but not by too much,” Zhou said.

Consumer inflation rose more than expected to 2.7 percent in the year to February from 1.5 percent in the year to January, official figures showed on Thursday. [ID:nTOE6290B5]

LOS ANGELES, Calif. –
The city of Toronto has come to the aid of Corey Haim’s family, Corey’s mother, Judy Haim, told Access Hollywood‘s Maria Menounos on Saturday.

The city will be covering the cost of the late star’s funeral on Tuesday. Judy added that Startifacts.com, a celebrity memorabilia site, had offered to cover additional costs — Corey’s tombstone, food, guests and other miscellaneous expenses — though it has not yet provided such funds.

Earlier on Saturday, a rep for Startifacts.com told Access that the site has offered $20,000 to the Haim family to help cover funeral costs and other expenses.

According to the rep, site owner Michael Kronick first befriended the troubled actor in the early 2000s, buying a number of personal items from him. Upon hearing the news of Corey’s death, the site reached out to the family to provide assistance.

As previously reported by AccessHollywood.com, Haim friend and fellow former child actor Scott Schwartz had been organizing the late star’s belongings to sell on eBay in order to raise money for the funeral, which the rep said Startifacts has since purchased directly.

However, as of Saturday afternoon, three items from Corey’s personal wardrobe remained up for auction on Schwartz’s eBay page.

The rep said the site plans to hold future benefit auctions with the memorabilia, but in the meantime, intends on giving the family a $20,000 check at the funeral on Tuesday.

Tthe family, which reached out to the public on Friday for aid, is still in need of financial assistance, which fans can provide via the Corey Haim Memorial Fund.

“We gave that money out of the goodness of our heart, but we do work with so many celebrities and we always try to help them out, especially when they’re hard on cash,” the Startifacts rep said, urging that Corey fans continue to support Judy – who is battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy – by donating to the Memorial Fund.

Judy told Access last week that she was informed by the LA County Corner’s Office that her son had died of pulmonary congestion. His toxicology report is expected to be released in six to eight weeks. The actor died in the early morning hours of March 10.
Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) – Floyd Mayweather Jr. has gone radio silent for the weekend.

After posting 8-10 updates a day on his Twitter feed and web site, Pretty Boy Floyd posted a brief message Friday morning, and nothing since.

“Have a good weekend,” he wrote. “Have fun, live life to the fullest, but be safe doing whatever it is you will be doing this weekend. Ill be training and spending time with my family.”

For the rest of the boxing world “whatever it is you will be doing this weekend” will likely involve the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey welterweight showdown on Saturday night.

While the sport looks toward that fight, Mayweather is looking the other way, pretending not to notice. Despite that, he will cast a heavy shadow on the bout.

Pacquiao-Clottey has been dubbed “The Event,” but make no mistake, Mayweather’s presence would have added the word “Main” in between the two words.

Like a jilted fiancé on what should have been their wedding day, Floyd had big plans for March 13. A few months ago, he was the one scheduled to be facing off with Pacquiao in Dallas.

It was supposedly the fight that Mayweather came out of retirement to make. It was going to be the biggest fight that the sport could put together. Instead, negotiations turned ugly, then fell apart.

Mayweather’s camp insisted on including steroid testing, offending Pacquiao. Tens of millions of dollars weren’t enough to salve the wounded egos.

“In all the fights that I’ve done (for Pacquiao)–the Hatton fight, the De La Hoya fight, the Cotto fight–it was never any kind of serious problems in the negotiations,” said Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum. “The Mayweather negotiations threw me for a loop because they became so acrimonious and so in a lot of ways nonsensical.”

Instead of facing him in the ring, Pacquiao signed on to face him in court, filing a defamation of character lawsuit against Mayweather for making the steroid allegations.

“He was trying to ruin our reputation with those allegations,” said Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach, “but we do want to fight him and we do want to knock him out.”

“You don’t have to be geniuses to know what they were trying to do,” said Arum. “They were trying to get into (Pacquiao’s) head. Get him completely discombobulated so he would be easy pickings for Mayweather.”

Instead, Pacquiao signed to fight Clottey.

“Now the negotiations for the Clottey fight took about 24 hours,” said Arum. Not surprising, since guys that win the lottery usually don’t feel the need to negotiate very hard.

“I wasn’t really thinking about this fight at all,” said Clottey of his unexpected payday. “All the guys were talking about Pacquiao vs. Mayweather and it looks like somebody didn’t want to fight. It was good for me. If they didn’t do it, I get in. I feel like it was a blessing from God.”

One man’s windfall is another man’s torpedo. While Clottey was marveling at his good fortune, promoter Bob Arum had to find a way to market a relative unknown instead of the one of the sport’s biggest personalities.

“To be frank, we had to overcome disappointment,” said Arum. “People were looking forward to a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. That is clear. Manny has a huge fan base. He has crossed over. Our job is to present Joshua Clottey as he is.”

While Mayweather may be feeling left out this weekend, he landed in a soft place. He’ll face Shane Mosley in May.

The bout matches two of the sport’s biggest names and will draw a huge pay-per-view audience. But still, it’s no Mayweather-Pacquiao.

Assuming both fighters defeat their spring opponents, will they be able to set aside the hard feelings and come to an agreement for a fight?

“I don’t really need Floyd Mayweather,” said Pacquiao, “because what I have achieved in boxing is good enough for me and people know that by comparing my achievements in boxing to his achievements.”

“Some fighters like me we can be the greatest fighters without fast words and trash talk,” he said. “His style is talking a lot of trash and it is not a good example for everybody.”

“Fighting a guy like Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather is always kind of political, a little bit,” said Clottey. “You’re not going to get it done easily.”

Freddie Roach is more confident that the fight will get done. “I think Manny’s fans will be disappointed if he doesn’t fight Mayweather this year,” he said. “It’s the fight the world wants to see. I can’t see either guy go any other way. Where else are they going to go to get the money they want?”

“I can’t see that fight not happening,” he added.

And when it does, you can bet that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will no longer be radio silent.

BRUSSELS, March 13 (Reuters) – Euro zone finance ministers are likely to agree on Monday on the principles and parameters of financial help to Greece, if it is required, but leave out any sums until Athens asks for them, an EU source said.

“I think we should be able to agree on principles of a euro area facility for coordinated assistance. The European Commission and the Eurogroup task force would have the mandate to finalise the work,” the senior EU source, with knowledge of the preparations, told Reuters.

“It would be the principles and parameters of a facility or mechanism, which then could be activated if needed and requested.”

British newspaper the Guardian reported its sources as saying the aid to be made available by the bailout could reach 25 billion euros. Greece’s borrowing needs for the whole of 2010 total 53.2 billion euros.

But the source said no numbers were likely at this stage.

“There is no agreed figure. You would have a framework mechanism and you would have blank spaces for the numbers because there has been no request (from Greece) yet,” the source said.

Finance ministers from the 16 countries using the euro, the Eurogroup, meet on Monday in Brussels to discuss the Greek debt crisis and the country’s progress in introducing austerity measures necessary to regain the confidence of markets.

Greece has announced steps to reduce its budget deficit this year to 8.7 percent of GDP from 12.7 percent in 2009, triggering street protests and strikes but also reducing market concern over whether the country would be able to service its debt.

The source said that among the instruments considered to help Greece were both bilateral loans and loan guarantees.

“The preparations have been done under the Eurogroup by member states and the Commission. The Commission has done much of the technical work,” the source said.

“The aim of the exercise so far has been to do the technical preparations, so that the political decision could be possible on Monday. Germany holds the key at the moment.”

Polls show that public opinion in Europe’s biggest economy Germany is strongly opposed to their country bailing out Greece, which has for years provided unreliable statistics about the true size of its deficit and debt, breaking EU budget rules.

In a move that is likely to alleviate German concerns about spending money on Greece, the Commission has said it would soon make a proposal for stronger economic cooperation between euro zone countries and tighter surveillance of their performance.
