Cyclone leaves Australian homes without power

Tropical cyclone Ului has hit the Australian state of Queensland with destructive wind gusts of 200 km/h, leaving some 60,000 homes without power.

Early Sunday, the cyclone crossed the coast at Airlie Beach as a category three storm with winds smashing dozens of boats on top of the rocks and blowing over tress and signs.

The damage to power infrastructure seems to be severe in some areas. The Washington Post reported that authorities have instructed energy company crews on standby to restore power as soon as the winds weaken.

Whitsundays Mayor Mike Brunker said disaster management authorities would meet later to evaluate the damage so that funds could be directed towards the repairs.

The country’s weather bureau says it expects the storm to die down as it moves inland.
